Migraine Care That Fits the Life of an Adolescent

For adolescents with migraine, treatment needs to fit real life. Learn how Nerivio's REN technology offers a drug-free, self-managed option that adolescents can control themselves and use standalone or alongside other therapies.

For an adolescent living with migraine, treatment is only useful if it can fit into the life they are trying to live.

That life might mean sitting in class when an attack begins, preparing for a big exam, heading to practice, meeting friends, or simply trying to get through a normal day without a migraine taking over. The challenge, then, is not only finding a treatment that works. It’s finding an approach that gives adolescents a meaningful degree of control, flexibility, and independence in managing their migraine.

This is where Remote Electrical Neuromodulation (REN) offers a different approach for patients 8 years of age and up.  

Treatment that puts control in their hands

Nerivio is a wearable, nonpharmacologic migraine treatment that is controlled through a smartphone app. During a 45-minute treatment session, the device delivers electrical stimulation to the upper arm, activating the body’s own pain inhibitory mechanisms through conditioned pain modulation (CPM) [1].  

That design is crucial for adolescents. Treatment doesn’t have to revolve around swallowing a pill, dealing with the side effects, finding a place to lie down, or leaving whatever they’re doing to seek assistance. A wearable device can be used discreetly and controlled directly by the person experiencing the attack.  

In other words, REN is designed around self-management, giving adolescents an active role in their own care.

And in a post hoc analysis of 35 adolescents, REN demonstrated meaningful acute treatment outcomes, with 37.1% achieving pain freedom at two hours and 71.4% achieving pain relief. Importantly, REN also demonstrated consistency across repeated treatments, with 40% of participants achieving pain freedom in at least half of their treated attacks [1].

Built for real life

Clinical results tell only part of the story. Adolescents also need a treatment they can realistically incorporate into everyday life.

Real-world evidence from more than 1,600 adolescent REN users, representing more than 13,000 treatments, shows that they are doing exactly that. When medication use was reported, REN was used as the only therapy in 64.4% of treatments [2].  

This does not mean REN has to replace medication. Rather, it demonstrates that adolescents can use a nonpharmacological treatment as a standalone option when appropriate, while also having the flexibility to incorporate REN alongside other acute treatments.

The same study found that among adolescents using REN as a standalone treatment, 60.3% achieved consistent pain relief in at least half of their evaluable treatments, while 66.3% experienced consistent relief from functional disability [2].  

That last point is particularly important. For an adolescent, successful migraine care is not simply about reducing pain. It is about getting back to class, activities, friends, and everyday life.

From treating attacks to changing their trajectory

REN may also offer an opportunity to think beyond the individual migraine attack.

In a real-world study of adolescents who used REN frequently, the average number of REN treatment days decreased from 12.6 in the first month to 9.0 in the second month and 7.4 in the third [3]. While treatment days were used as a proxy for migraine days and the study was not designed as a dedicated adolescent prevention trial, the findings suggest a preventive benefit from frequent REN use [3].

This creates an interesting possibility: a treatment used to manage migraine attacks can become part of a broader strategy for reducing migraine burden over time.

Ultimately, the differentiator may be less about what REN replaces and more about what it adds: a nonpharmacological option that adolescents can control themselves, use as a standalone treatment or alongside other therapies, and incorporate into the realities of everyday life.

For a condition that can make adolescents feel like they have lost control, giving some of that control back may be an important part of better migraine care.
